BOE: "Can't Tape Our Meetings" Unless....

*I add the below information to my request?

All persons recording Board proceedings shall hold the Board harmless and indemnify the Board against all damage or injury whether to equipment, to themselves or to others.

What exactly does the above clause mean? How broad is it? Is it a reasonable request? Doesn't the above clause have the potential to discourage people? How many people would be willing to blindly sign something like this?

THIS policy is now part of the pool of many things that the Plainfield school district is in need of improvement or clarification.

Will I add the BOE's own statement to my own request? Not before I get my own legal advice.

So, no taping of the school board meeting will happen tonight, not because I am not ready, but because the school board's policy is discouraging me from exercising my legal right and is sending me to get my own legal advise.

*Update: I guess the brief back and forth with the school board counsel today on the validity of their request is making the school board review their policy on taping meetings. Policy 9326 was added to tonight's school board meeting at the last minute and the BOE's counsel said he is going to do research and prepare a draft for the changes the school board wants to see for the policy on taping meetings. Before I release my own research and legal opinion let's see what changes the BOE proposes, I am curious to see what they want to change. Oy! If dealing with school matters is beginning to sound like a never ending tale is because it is! We would make a pretty good subject for a TV Show!

Maria we have all come to realize the Board changes its position to ensure "We the community" never really find out what is going on. Everytime you move in the direction of more clearity they move in another or put up a road block to force you to have waste more time to find out what is really going on. This Board provides more excuses for keeping information out of the public's hand than necessary. Instead of working with the community to get this district moving in the right direction there is forever a big wall to keep us out. The level of trust, honest or transparency is just not part of their thinking. The Board should be working for the best interest of the children and the community but there is a breakdown of communicaiton leaving many of us with a bad taste in their mouths.

11:58,

If it helps, the way I see it is that everytime the school board/district/counsel mounts a challenge they actually offer an opportunity for all of us to learn: We learn more about the district; about the resources that are there for us to tap into and we learn more about how to best challenge their own set of challenges. It is almost like a dance, we started poorly aware of what the steps looked like, but litle by litle, and through repetition, we are becoming better "dancers" and sooner or later we will be masters at the school district's "dance floor". Stay strong, have faith, and keep the ball rolling. That is what I tell myself everyday. Thanks!
